Estate Planning Tasks You Shouldn’t Put Off

It’s easy to put off estate planning, after all estate planning means having to: deal with lawyers, keeping tabs on the latest games Congress is playing with the estate taxes, and contemplate the possibility that one day you may become incapacitate or die. But as Christine Benz points out in her Morningstar article: “5 Estate Planning Tasks That You Shouldn’t Put Off“, there are 5 things you should be doing now to insure that you can maintain control over your assets while you are alive and well, provide for yourself and your loved ones if you become disables, and give what you have to whom you want, the way you want, when you want upon your death.

The 5 key tasks that form the foundation of any estate plan are:

  • Keep your beneficiary designations up to date
  • Designate legal guardians for your minor children
  • Create a health care directive and a Will
  • Draft a Power of Attorney
  • Name an Executor
